With approximately 28 million Americans affected, just about all of us know someone who has some level of hearing loss. (Frankly, it doesn’t just affect them.).

At St. Jude, we provide hearing loss evaluations, hearing aid consultations, and treatment referrals for people of all ages. If you suspect hearing loss, you should ask your doctor for a referral to our licensed audiologists.

Early diagnosis and development of a treatment plan for hearing loss can be critical to ensure proper language development for children and optimum quality of life for adults. What is an Audiologist?

Assessment

Among other services, we use state-of-the-art diagnostic tools to determine the cause, type and extent of hearing loss. This assessment allows for effective treatment and medical management of any hearing loss. Depending on the patient’s age and symptoms, we choose appropriate tests using the latest digital technology.

For adults, tests include the Auditory Brain Stem Response Assessments (ABR) and Electronystagmography (ENG), which objectively evaluate the auditory brain stem nervous system and vestibular function (balance).

For newborns, St. Jude is one of the few Orange County hospitals accredited to provide evaluation and follow-up care. We conduct the first two phases of the Newborn Hearing Screening Program.

Hearing Aid Evaluation

About 90 percent of all hearing loss can be helped with hearing aids, while most of the remaining 10 percent can be treated with medical intervention. In a hearing aid evaluation, we recommend and provide fittings for the most advanced hearing aid technology. Automatic digital features are now available to ensure comfortable listening with background noise and for telephone use. Our team has the expertise to select the most appropriate hearing aids to meet your needs in a variety of listening situations.

Where appropriate, we can also provide consultation with an Otolaryngologist, a physician specializing in the medical and surgical treatment of ear, nose and throat disorders.

In addition to hearing loss assessment and testing, our team provides comprehensive evaluation and treatment recommendations and referrals for hyperacusis (sensitivity to certain frequency ranges of sound), tinnitus (ringing or roaring in the ears), vertigo or dizziness and balance-related disorders.
